Auckland Transition Authority website
(Decommissioned October 2026)
Background
The purpose of ata.govt.nz was to explain the work of the Auckland Transition Agency (ATA), an organisation with a limited life span, tasked with setting up a new Auckland council by November 2010.
The content of the website was not maintained by Department staff, but ATA itself, an independent agency.
The ATA was responsible for the 'technical' side of the reorganisation of Auckland. Its purpose was to amalgamate Auckland's then-eight local authorities into one unified structure.
The website had a limited lifespan, and existed alongside the Making Auckland Greater website which recorded the 'public policy' side of the work to create a new local government structure for Auckland. This followed on from the work of the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance, revising and building upon its recommendations.
The work of the ATA became redundant with the establishment of the new Auckland Council after 2010. The website was decommissioned in 2026.
