Frequently asked questions about the EMS replacement project and the EMS CI upgrade.

1. Why are there two EMS projects –the EMS upgrade and EMS replacement projects?

The EMS replacement project aims to establish a future-proof EMS that delivers value for money and supports sector needs for the next 10–20 years from 2032. The EMS CI upgrade is about improvements to the existing EMS until the replacement EMS becomes operational.

2 . What is planned for the EMS upgrade?

The EMS upgrade will replace the current EMS central system and site controllers and improve the EMS website. Other changes are possible, but the Department will consult with the sector before making any decisions on these.

3. What system protocol will the upgraded EMS Central System use?

The Department does not specify the protocol used for the EMS Central system. We understand the upgraded EMS Central System will use the G2S protocol.

4. Will the upgraded EMS require changes to existing QCOM machines?

No. The upgraded system will be compatible with existing QCOM machines and with existing fibre optic cabling.

5. Will venue operations be disrupted during implementation of the EMS upgrades, particularly installing new site controllers?

No. Implementation will be phased, include pilot venues, and is expected to have minimal or no impact on venue operations.

6. Will ancillary equipment and third-party systems be affected by the EMS upgrade?

No immediate impact is expected. The new EMS Site Controllers will include secure API ports to support real-time data access, maintaining compatibility with existing ancillary systems. The Department intends to maintain secure data access for third-party services to support venue operations and regulatory requirements.

7. Has a decision been made about the future of data sniffers?

No. The Department has not made any decision regarding sniffers and acknowledges their importance for venue operations and third-party services.

8. Will there be additional costs to societies for installing new EMS Site Controllers?

No. Any changes to the site controllers will be cost neutral.

9. Will the sector be consulted on decisions about EMS upgrades and the replacement EMS?

Yes. The Department is consulting on changes to the EMS as well as the proposal to enable non-cash payment. More detailed engagement with the sector will also happen before implementing any upgrades.
