Related investigations
The Government Inquiry is one of several investigations into the landslides. Each has a different purpose and scope:
- Government Inquiry into the Fatal Landslides in Tauranga (this inquiry) – an independent investigation focused on how the landslides happened, how risks were managed, and recommendations for the future.
- Police and coronial process – Police investigate on behalf of the coroner, to examine the circumstances of the deaths.
- Tauranga City Council – commissioned an external review by Paul Davison KC into the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park landslide. Although the Inquiry must consider the Davison review, it will reach its own conclusions and recommendations in due course.
- WorkSafe New Zealand – establishing whether there has been a breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 by businesses and organisations related to the operation of the holiday park.
The current Government Inquiry is separate from and does not repeat the work of the Government Inquiry into the North Island severe weather events response.
