Our commitment to accessibility

Te Tari Taiwhenua Department of Internal Affairs is committed to delivering all information on this website so that it is accessible. We want to provide our information to everyone, so we aim to meet the following New Zealand Government standards:

In 2003, Cabinet directed core government agencies to implement the New Zealand Government Web Standards in a Cabinet Minute and Paper. Internal Affairs is also a signatory to the Accessibility Charter.

The text on this website should be easy to see and read. This means that you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels, fonts and text size
  • zoom in up to 400% without spilling off the screen or having to scroll horizontally at small resolutions
  • navigate the website using just a keyboard, switch, or speech recognition software
  • navigate the website using a screen reader — including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver.

What we are doing to improve the accessibility of this website

Te Tari Taiwhenua Department of Internal Affairs is investigating solutions to this site’s known web accessibility conformance issues. We will continue to review this site for accessibility to discover how we are doing and where we can improve.

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible. For example:

  • many of our Adobe PDF and Microsoft Word documents may not be fully accessible to screen reader software (See: Help with documents)
  • some of our online forms are difficult to use with just a keyboard
  • the “Skip to content” link at the top of each page is not visible to sighted users
  • pages cannot be zoomed in to 400% without requiring horizontal scrolling to see all of the content

If you have trouble using any aspect of this web site, please contact: webmaster@dia.govt.nz

Most computers and mobile devices will open PDFs automatically.

If you don't have a PDF reader, download the free Adobe Reader application.

PDF Reader — Adobe

Some of the documents on this website have been created using Microsoft Office.

If you don't have Microsoft Office, there are some free options to help you open them.

If you're using a laptop or desktop computer you can open them using online services like:

  • Office 365 — requires a free Microsoft account
