Frequently Asked Questions

What credentials will this app be able to verify?

At launch, NZ Verify will be able to verify the following credentials:

  • US mobile driver licences: California, New York, Ohio, Georgia, Virginia, Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Utah, Puerto Rico, Iowa, New Mexico, Hawai’i, Alaska
  • Australia mobile driver licences: Queensland

In future, NZ Verify will likely support verifying the following credentials and more:

  • NZ: NZTA-issued digital driver licence, other accredited digital credentials
  • Australia: additional states mobile driver licences, digital photo IDs including NSW
  • EU: mobile driver licences, national ID cards
  • US: additional states mobile driver licences

How does NZ Verify ensure that a digital credential is authentic?

When NZ Verify verifies a digital credential it first confirms the credential’s cryptographic signature by matching it against that issuer’s public key—proving the credential really came from them and that it hasn’t been altered.

Next, it checks the expiry date and consults any revocation lists (or cached lists) to be sure the credential is still current.

If every test passes, the app displays the shared credential information and confirmation that the credential is “valid”.

Can foreign-issued credentials be used in New Zealand?

The launch of this app doesn’t change any current laws regarding where and when different credentials (whether physical or digital) can be used.

DIA is working with other public agencies to consider which laws and regulations may need amendment to enable the future wider use of digital identity credentials.

Why doesn’t the verifier support the New South Wales or Victoria digital driver licences?

NZ Verify supports credentials built to an agreed international standard. The digital driver licences produced by New South Wales and Victoria do not currently adhere to this standard.

However, both New South Wales and Victoria have indicated a move toward the international standard and therefore will be supported by NZ Verify in the future.

Can I use the app to hold or be issued a digital credential?

No. The NZ Verify app is designed only to verify credentials. Wallets and credentials will be available in New Zealand in the future as digital identity credentials are developed.

Is the app accredited under the Digital Identity Services Trust Framework?

The Digital Identity Services Trust Framework provides opt-in accreditation for digital identity services to demonstrate they are trustworthy. NZ Verify is not accredited as the Trust Framework does not currently regulate verifiers. However, NZ Verify is aligned with the Trust Framework rules and standards and therefore works with accredited wallets and digital credentials.

Does the verifier retain any data?

No.

No information is retained following the verification. In addition, screen shots and screen recording are blocked on the app.

Can the verifier be used to track credential holders?

No.

The app does not allow the tracking of credential holders by users of the app and there is no collection or transmission of personal identifying information.

Further, the underlying technology and the Digital Identity Services Trust Framework do not allow for the tracking of credential holders.

Is this app the same as the NZ COVID Pass Verifier?

Although NZ Verify is built on similar technology, it is a separate app designed for a much broader range of digital credentials.
