The information below is posted at quarterly intervals. It shows the numbers and types of societies licensed to operate approved gaming machines at approved venues on that day. It does not include any gaming machines, societies or venues that were, or may become, the subject of an amendment or new application to operate gaming machines and were therefore unlicensed on the date shown.

Gaming machine statistics on this page represent a 'snapshot' of the current state of affairs at the time the statistics were collated. Other factors may affect future machine numbers in a district and therefore this information should NOT be taken as conclusive. Please contact the Gambling Compliance Group directly if you want up to date information about current/future machine numbers in a district.

More Information

The following table lists the sites/venues that were on a society’s schedule of sites on 17 October 2001. Sites or venues that were on a society’s licence on 17 October 2001, and have not been without a Class 4 venue licence for a period of six months or more, may operate up to a maximum of 18 gaming machines. The actual total will depend on the number of notified gaming machines shown in the table below. Contact the Gambling Compliance Group to find out if there has been a period of six months or more during which no licence was held.

The following table lists the number of gaming machines notified as being operated at named venues as at 22 September 2003. Where this number is less than 18, and the venue is one which is subject to s.92 of the Gambling Act, a territorial authority consent is required to increase gaming machines numbers from that notified.

Gambling Expenditure Statistics

The following document shows the amount spent on the four main types of gambling activity - TAB racing and sports betting, NZ Lotteries games, gaming machines (outside casinos) and casinos - between 1986 and 2010.

Key Trends Over the 2009/2010 Period

In 2009/2010, gambling expenditure decreased by 5.7 per cent from $2.028 billion to $1.913 billion. This was due to decreases in expenditure on NZ Lotteries products, non-casino gaming machines and casino gambling. The decreases were partially offset by an increase in TAB racing and sports betting turnover.

Compared with the previous year:

• TAB racing and sports betting expenditure increased by 3.4 per cent from $269 million to $278 million. The increase was largely attributable to a significant increase in sports betting.
• NZ Lotteries products expenditure decreased by 14.2 per cent from $404 million to $347 million. However, the extraordinary 2008/09 figure was due to record sales for two ‘must be won’ jackpot draws. The 2009/10 expenditure figure is slightly more than the 2007/08 expenditure figure ($346 million).
• Non-casino gaming machine expenditure decreased by 4.5 per cent from $889 million to $849 million. By comparison, between 2007/08 and 2008/09, expenditure decreased by 5.2 per cent. Expenditure on non-casino gaming machines peaked at $1.035 billion in 2003/04.
• Casino gambling expenditure (which includes casino gaming machines) decreased by 5.8 per cent from $465 million to $438 million. This continues the previous year’s decrease of 2.4 per cent.

Estimated turnover across the four sectors was $15.183 billion, compared with $15.892 billion for the 2008/09 year. This 4.5 per cent decline in total turnover was due to the respective expenditure increase and decreases for the four major gambling sectors.
