Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships service and product fees increase from 18 June 2026
21 May 2026
Today, the Department of Internal Affairs has announced a fee increase for its Births, Deaths, Marriages and Relationships (BDM) services and products.
From 18 June 2026, the prices for most services will increase by approximately 5.6%. A standard birth, death, and marriage certificate will increase from $33 to $35. Copies or electronic copies of any document will increase from $25 to $26, and marriage and civil union licence fees will increase from $150 to $158.
While birth, death and marriage certificates are the most commonly accessed services, the increase applies across majority of the BDM services and products.
“BDM services are primarily funded by fees, not by taxpayers, and they have remained unchanged for almost ten years,” says Russell Burnard, Registrar-General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages.
“I am confident this outcome strikes the right balance between keeping the fee increases as low as possible while ensuring we can meet the cost of running a sustainable Births, Deaths, and Marriages service.”
The adjustment will support rising costs of delivering services, including staffing, distribution, and the replacement of essential IT systems.
Registering a birth or death will remain free of charge, and no new fees are being introduced.
“Updating fees is essential to maintain high-quality, efficient and sustainable services,” says Russell Burnard.
