About us › Environmental Performance
Environmental performance reporting is part of a whole-of-government programme to find better ways of measuring and reporting on progress towards sustainability. The documents on this web page are produced as part of the Department's commitment to this process, led by the Ministry for the Environment.
Carbon Neutral Public Service Programme
The Carbon Neutral Public Service programme aims to demonstrate government leadership on sustainability by reducing government’s environmental impact. It will do this by making the 34 core public service agencies carbon neutral. The programme will make sure the six lead agencies are carbon neutral by 2012 with the other 28 agencies being on the path to carbon neutrality by 2012. The programme involves a three-step process.
- 1. Measuring the greenhouse gas emissions from each agency’s activities.
2. Reducing those emissions.
3. Offsetting remaining emissions by undertaking projects to remove an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or prevent it being released.
Department of Internal Affairs Emissions Inventory and Reduction Plan
The Department of Internal Affairs is one of the 28 core public service agencies that will be on the path to carbon neutrality by 2012. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from our organisation's activities is an important step in attaining carbon neutrality. The role of the inventory and reduction plan is to identify and record opportunities and initiatives that help to reduce emissions.
