Independent Audit of the Chief Archivist’s Recordkeeping Practices under the Public Records Act 2005

The Minister of Internal Affairs is required by sections 34 and 35 of the Public Records Act 2005 to commission an independent audit of the recordkeeping practices of the Chief Archivist and to present a report to the House of Representatives.  The Chief Archivist arranges recordkeeping audits of all other public offices.

The Minister of Internal Affairs bases the criteria for independent audit of the recordkeeping practices of the Chief Archivist on advice from the Archives Council. The Archives Council’s key recommendations were that the criteria and approach to the audit be the same as those applied in recordkeeping audits of other public offices, and that the audit be undertaken by individuals and organisations independent of Archives New Zealand.

In order to maintain that independence, the Department’s Internal Audit team provided the overall management and delivery of the audit commissioned by the Minister. Price Waterhouse Cooper was commissioned to undertake the audit of the recordkeeping practices of the Chief Archivist.
