Service Overview

The New Zealand Citizenship Office administers grants of citizenship, confirmation and denials of citizenship, and descent registrations. Through the Citizenship Office you can: For information about permits and visas to visit, work or live in New Zealand please visit the New Zealand Immigration Service website.



Important Notices

Applications for Citizenship Prior to Christmas 2009
Please do not send in your application for citizenship between the 19th of December 2009 and the 4th of January 2010. The Citizenship Office will be closed from the 24th of December 2009, and will reopen on the 5th of January 2010 and, while your application and documents will be held securely, your documents will not available in case of emergency.

Citizenship Office Christmas Hours
The Citizenship Office will be closed from 5:00pm on the 24th of December 2009, and will reopen on the 5th of January 2010. Citizenship case officers will not be available during this time. The Contact Centre will be open on the 29th, 30th and 31st of December 2009 from 8:30am to 5:00pm for urgent enquiries only. While your application and documents will be held securely, your documents will not be available in case of emergency.

Applications for Citizenship Received On or After the 21st of April 2010
All applications for the grant of New Zealand citizenship received by the New Zealand Citizenship office on or after the 21st of April 2010 will be assessed against the five year residence requirement. Please ensure your application is in the New Zealand Citizenship office before the 21st of April 2010 if this affects you.

Information Matching

Information you supply to us may be used by other government agencies to allow more effective verification of information and help assess your eligibility for various services. Information matching is carried out under the authority of, and consistent with, Part 10 of the Privacy Act 1993 and is monitored by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
