Background and overview
This Inquiry closed on 19 August 2019
The Government Inquiry into the Auckland Fuel Supply Disruption - Te Pakirehua Kāwanatanga ki te Momotunga Kora ki Tāmaki Makaurau - was an independent inquiry that commenced on 10 December 2018.
The Refinery to Auckland Pipeline was shut down for 10 days following the discovery of a leak on 14 September 2017. This led to rationing of jet fuel supplied to the Auckland Airport, flight cancellations, and stock-outs of some ground fuels (mainly premium petrol) at a number of service stations around Auckland.
The Inquiry drew lessons from the event to provide recommendations for improving the resilience of fuel supply in the Auckland region. It did not look into whether issues of criminal or civil liability arose.
The Inquiry reported back to the Minister of Energy and Resources on 19 August 2019.
