The way we work

We make diversity a strength

Internal Affairs combines the efficiency of a single organisation with an understanding of the diverse people and sectors we support and employ, here and overseas. This gives us strength in service delivery, regulation, policy and the support of cultural institutions. We have built our system of governance to manage and benefit from the tension between diversity and oneness. This tension drives constant examination of what we do and how we should do it. Our leadership governs the whole organisation.

We are positive about our work, and those with whom we work

We treat with respect everyone with whom we work, serve their needs, and recognise their rights and duties under the law. When things go wrong we focus on the problem and its solution, learn from the experience, and do not seek to blame. We work for results and impose process only to achieve results. We focus on the future. We apply the lessons we learn and share them based on good evidence. We anticipate and accept constant change. We focus on performance so we can improve.

We uphold our tradition of service

We learn from our long history, which began in 1840. We uphold the enduring values of public service that have built our reputation, and the confidence New Zealanders have in government. Our service ethic is the foundation of all we do.
