‘Bride’ and ‘bridegroom’ choices expected to remain on marriage forms

16 April 2013

The choices ‘bride’ and ‘bridegroom’ are expected to remain on marriage forms if the Marriage Amendment Bill passes into law this week.

Media reports over the weekend that ‘bride’ and ‘bridegroom’ would be removed from marriage forms are not correct, says Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Jeff Montgomery.

“The choices ‘bride’ and ‘bridegroom’ are expected to remain on marriage forms for people to use. We are also looking at additional options for people who do not want to be referred to as ‘bride’ or ‘bridegroom’.

“A final decision on the choices for people to use on marriage forms will be made by Cabinet as part of new regulations to introduce the new marriage forms.”
