On 29 June 2023 the Government announced the establishment of a Government Inquiry into the response to the North Island severe weather events that occurred during January and February 2023: Cyclone Hale; heavy rainfall in the Northland, Auckland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty regions; and Cyclone Gabrielle.  The four members of the Inquiry are Sir Jerry Mateparae (Chair), John Ombler CNZM QSO, Rangimarie Hunia and Julie Greene

The Secretariat for the Inquiry is being established and the Inquiry is planning its approach to its work.  Anita Balakrishnan has been appointed as the Manager heading the Inquiry’s Secretariat. 

The Inquiry’s Terms of Reference provides that from 31 July 2023 the Inquiry may begin considering evidence. 

Over the coming months the Inquiry will share more information on how it plans to operate.  The Inquiry will deliver its interim findings by 7 December 2023 and its final report by 26 March 2024.
