To get an igovt ID, you will need to complete an online application and then have your photo taken at one of the locations and times listed below. You need to bring your valid New Zealand passport issued after 1 January 2004 or a New Zealand citizenship certificate granted after 1 January 2004. You also need to bring your New Zealand-registered cellphone.

Endorsed Passports - please note, if you have an endorsed passport (issued prior to April 2005), the igovt ID can only be issued in the name stated on the original person's passport information page (located on the inside cover of the passport).

How your igovt ID is issued:

  1. Book an appointment to have your photo taken at a convenient location and time by emailing igovt@dia.govt.nz.
  2. We will email you an appointment time along with a link to complete the first stage of your application online.
  3. After completing the first stage, you will need to attend your appointment to have a photo taken.
  4. After the photo has been taken, it will be compared to the one stored in the passport or citizenship database.
  5. You are now ready to use the igovt identity verification service and you will receive an email to confirm you have been issued an igovt ID.


Locations and times to get your photo taken

To be eligible for an igovt ID your New Zealand passport or New Zealand citizenship certificate needs to have been issued after the 1st of January 2004.
