Email Scams

Email spam is often used to carry out fraud. Be suspicious – any offer that sounds too good to be true probably is!

'Phishing' emails are a common example. They pretend to come from a financial institution, such as a bank, and urge you to click a link to the company’s website and enter your account details. If you think you have been a victim of a phishing email please forward the details to phishing@antispam.govt.nz

Don't be fooled! These websites are clever fakes, and typing in your details could result in your account being emptied by the fraudsters. Banks never contact customers by email and ask them to confirm personal financial information. Don’t even click on the links in these emails as this could infect your computer with a virus.

If you receive spam with fraudulent content, you may have more than one avenue for complaint. The spam itself is illegal and you can report it on the spam complaints page of this website.

The spam’s content may also be illegal under other laws.

You can report email scams to The Ministry of Consumer Affairs Scamwatch website: www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/scamwatch/reportscamform

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs also provides a Scam Alerts section at: http://www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/scamwatch/protect-others/scam-media.html. This contains information about scams that have been notified to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, or have been publicised in the media. Please note that this list does not cover all scams which are currently circulating.
