Resource material › Information We Provide › Gaming Statistics

Gaming machine statistics can be viewed or downloaded from the files below. Hard copy versions are available from the Gambling Compliance Group.

This information is posted at quarterly intervals. It shows the numbers and types of societies licensed to operate approved gaming machines at approved venues on that day. It does not include any gaming machines, societies or venues that were, or may become, the subject of an amendment or new application to operate gaming machines and were therefore unlicensed on the date shown.

Gaming machine statistics on this page represent a 'snapshot' of the current state of affairs at the time the statistics were collated. Other factors may affect future machine numbers in a district and therefore this information should NOT be taken as conclusive. Please contact the Gambling Compliance Group directly if you want up to date information about current/future machine numbers in a district.

For more information about the latest gambling statistics, please read our media release: Pokie takings down (30 April 2013)

List of Venues by Territorial Authority/District as at 17 October 2001

The following table lists the sites/venues that were on a society’s schedule of sites on 17 October 2001.

Sites or venues that were on a society’s licence on 17 October 2001, and have not been without a Class 4 venue licence for a period of six months or more, may operate up to a maximum of 18 gaming machines. The actual total will depend on the number of notified gaming machines shown in the table below. Contact the Gambling Compliance Group to find out if there has been a period of six months or more during which no licence was held.

Gaming Machine Numbers as at 22 September 2003

The following table lists the number of gaming machines notified as being operated at named venues as at 22 September 2003.

Where this number is less than 18, and the venue is one which is subject to s.92 of the Gambling Act, a territorial authority consent is required to increase gaming machines numbers from that notified.

Gaming Machine Profits (GMP) Data

The following notes explain more about the GMP data listed above.

Report 1 - EGM and GMP at suburb level for quarter to (date):
This document lists all venues in the clusters to which they have been assigned. Information on the venues themselves, such as addresses and class of venue (i.e. club/hotel etc) is already published on this web page. Venues have been clustered by area within a larger region (e.g. Newton, Auckland). Where there are fewer than three venues in an area, areas have been combined into clusters of three or more venues, with consideration given to both geographic and socio-economic location.

Report 2 - List of venues per cluster as of (date):
This list tabulates key information about clusters of venues. When published, it will include a caveat that adjustments can be made for incidents such as unpaid jackpots or unpaid winnings. These adjustments are made after the incident, and may be for a different period. GMP may be affected depending on when adjustments are made, and therefore this data cannot be compared to the published quarterly statistics.

Report 3 - GMP by number of machines at venue for quarter to (date):
This tabulates GMP data according to the number of machines at a venue. No data is provided for venues with one machine or more than 18 machines, as there are only two venues fitting in to each category.

Report 4 - GMP by class of venue for quarter to (date):
This tabulates GMP according to the class of venue.

Gambling Expenditure Statistics

Gambling Expenditure Statistics show the amount spent on the four main types of gambling activity – TAB racing and sports betting, NZ Lotteries games, gaming machines (outside casinos), and casino gambling – between the 1988 and 2012 financial years.

The table must be read in conjunction with the Explanations page.
Totals may differ from the sum of column entries due to rounding. The Gambling Expenditure Statistics are compiled using information from the Electronic Monitoring System and gambling operators. The Department takes no responsibility for any decisions made on the basis of these statistics.

Record gambling expenditure in 2011-12

Gamblers in New Zealand spent a record almost $2.1 billion dollars on the four main forms of gambling in the 2011/12 financial year, 3.2 per cent more than the previous year, according to figures compiled by the Department. But, when adjusted for inflation, total gambling expenditure in 2012 had declined by almost 19 per cent from the peak recorded in 2004 ($2547 inflation-adjusted).

TAB racing and sports betting increased by 4.9 per cent from $273 million to $286 million, reflecting gambling on the 2011 Rugby World and the growth of fixed-odds racing betting; spending on NZ Lotteries products rose 3.5 per cent from $404 million to $419 million; casino gambling expenditure rose 8 per cent from $471 million to $509 million, due to growth across SkyCity’s casinos and the Christchurch casino reopening after the February 2011 earthquake. Spending on gaming machines in pubs and clubs dropped by 0.3 per cent from $856 million to $854 million.

An estimated $648 million was distributed to a variety of community purposes from gambling proceeds. Non-casino gaming machine trusts raised an estimated $314.2 million for authorised purposes. NZ Lotteries transferred $197.2 million to the Lottery Grants Board for community services and projects. The New Zealand Racing Board allocated $132.8 million, mostly to support racing club activities and infrastructure. Casinos paid just over $3.5 million to their community trusts.
