Terms of Reference

Purpose

To recommend to Government, for its consideration, a package of actions and procedures to address the health and well being needs of Vietnam Veterans and their families and to develop a historical record of New Zealander’s service in Vietnam.


Issues to be considered

  • Public recognition of veterans’ service in Vietnam and exposure to a toxic environment.
  • The range and availability of assistance to address health and well-being concerns and the extension of assistance to families.
  • The status of the Reeves and McLeod reports.
  • Knowledge of Medallic recognition of service.
  • The adequacy of the War Pensions Act coverage in relation to exposure to a toxic environment.
  • The impact of any actions or decisions on other veterans’ groups.
  • Process for consulting with veterans and family members.
  • Writing up the anecdotal stories of veterans as part of developing the background record.
  • Consideration of the formation of a national register


To examine
  • 2004 Select Committee Report
  • Propositions put to Government by veterans’ groups
  • Any other material that might be relevant.
