You can use your New Zealand passport, birth certificate or citizenship certificate, or get a confirmation of birth in New Zealand certificate.

What you can use

You can prove you’re a New Zealand citizen using:
  • a New Zealand passport
  • a birth certificate from New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Niue or Tokelau
  • a New Zealand citizenship certificate
  • a confirmation of birth in New Zealand certificate.

Your New Zealand passport

You can use your New Zealand passport to prove you’re a New Zealand citizen as long as it:
  • was issued after 1950
  • is (or was) valid for at least 5 years
  • hasn’t been altered, added to or had the photo page defaced.

Your birth certificate from New Zealand, Cook Islands, Niue or Tokelau

Your birth certificate doesn’t specifically say whether or not you’re a New Zealand citizen if you were born in:
  • New Zealand before 2006
  • Cook Islands before 2006
  • Niue, or
  • Tokelau.
Most authorities will accept it as proof of citizenship anyway, but if they don’t you can get a confirmation of birth in New Zealand certificate to prove you’re a citizen.


Confirmation of birth in New Zealand

If your birth certificate doesn't show your citizenship, you can use this certificate to confirm that you're a citizen because you were born in New Zealand, Niue, Tokelau or the Cook Islands.


Confirmation of birth in New Zealand form (PDF, 480kb, 4 pages)

You’ll need to:
  • include:
    • your original full birth certificate
    • 2 passport photos that meet the photo requirements
    • original documents showing any times you’ve changed your name
  • pay the fee of $112.40 by cheque, bank draft or credit card.
You’ll get the certificate in the post after about 15 working days.


Your certificate of citizenship by grant or descent

You can prove you’re a New Zealand citizen using an original:
  • certificate of New Zealand citizenship by grant
  • registration of New Zealand citizenship by descent.
If you’ve lost or can’t access your certificate of citizenship by grant
