Gaming Statistics

Statistics can be viewed or downloaded from the .pdf* and .xls** files below. To read or print .pdf* files, you need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. You can download this programme free from the Adobe site. If you do not have access to Excel 2003 or higher you may use the Excel file viewer to view, print and export the contents of .xls** files. Hard copy versions of these statistics are available from the Gambling Compliance Group.

Note: The gaming machine statistics on this page represent a 'snapshot' of the current state of affairs at the time the statistics were collated. Other factors may affect future machine numbers in a district and therefore this information should NOT be taken as conclusive. Please contact the Gambling Compliance Group directly if you want up to date information about current/future machine numbers in a district.

Gaming Machine Statistics

The information below is posted on the Department's website at quarterly intervals. It shows the numbers and types of societies licensed to operate approved gaming machines at approved venues on that day. It does not include any gaming machines, societies or venues that were, or may become, the subject of an amendment or new application to operate gaming machines and were therefore unlicensed on the date shown.

For more information about the latest gaming statistics, please read our media release: Annual pokie spend continues down (20.07.10)

Gaming Machine Profits (GMP) data:
  • NEW! Detailed GMP data - For quarter to June 2010 Excel** | PDF*
The following notes explain more about the GMP data listed above:
Report 1 - EGM and GMP at suburb level for quarter to (date):
This document lists all venues in the clusters to which they have been assigned. Information on the venues themselves, such as addresses and class of venue (i.e. club/hotel etc) is already published on this web page. Venues have been clustered by area within a larger region (e.g. Newton, Auckland). Where there are fewer than three venues in an area, areas have been combined into clusters of three or more venues, with consideration given to both geographic and socio-economic location.

Report 2 - List of venues per cluster as of (date):
This list tabulates key information about clusters of venues. When published, it will include a caveat that adjustments can be made for incidents such as unpaid jackpots or unpaid winnings. These adjustments are made after the incident, and may be for a different period. GMP may be affected depending on when adjustments are made, and therefore this data cannot be compared to the published quarterly statistics.

Report 3 - GMP by number of machines at venue for quarter to (date):
This tabulates GMP data according to the number of machines at a venue. No data is provided for venues with one machine or more than 18 machines, as there are only two venues fitting in to each category.

Report 4 - GMP by class of venue for quarter to (date):
This tabulates GMP according to the class of venue.

Archived Gambling Statistics

If you are looking for statistics dating back further than those listed above, please see our
Archived Gambling Statistics page.

This table lists the sites/venues that were on a society’s schedule of sites on 17 October 2001. Sites or venues that were on a society’s licence on 17 October 2001, and have not been without a Class 4 venue licence for a period of six months or more, may operate up to a maximum of 18 gaming machines. The actual total will depend on the number of notified gaming machines shown in the table below. Contact the Gambling Compliance Group to find out if there has been a period of six months or more during which no licence was held. The following table lists the number of gaming machines notified as being operated at named venues as at 22 September 2003. Where this number is less than 18, and the venue is one which is subject to s.92 of the Gambling Act, a territorial authority consent is required to increase gaming machines numbers from that notified.

Gambling Expenditure Statistics

The following document shows the amount spent on the four main types of gambling activity - racing, New Zealand Lotteries Commission, gaming machines (outside casinos) and casinos - between 1985 and 2009.
For more information, please read our media release: Gamblers spent a little less in 2008/09 (25.03.10)

Key Trends over the 2008/2009 Period

In 2008/09 gambling expenditure (player losses) decreased by less than one percent (by 0.3%, from $2.034 billion to $2.028 billion). This is a result of an increase in expenditure on Lotteries Commission products, but decreases in expenditure on racing and sports betting, non-casino gaming machines and casino gambling. The 2008/09 figure is below the peak expenditure figure of $2.039 billion in 2003/04.

  • Non-casino gaming machine expenditure decreased by 5.3% from $938 million to $889 million. This continues the decrease in expenditure of 1.3% in 2007/08. Expenditure on non-casino gaming machines had previously peaked at $1.035 billion in 2003/04. More up-to-date figures on gaming machines are available through the Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) and are posted on this website at the end of each quarter.
  • Expenditure on racing and sports betting decreased by 1.2% from $272 million to $269 million. This reverses the recent growth in racing and sports betting of 4.2% in 2007 and 1.2% in 2008. This year’s nominal figure is the same as in 2007. When inflation is taken into account, however, expenditure is still behind the $232 million figure of 1989, which was for racing only.
  • Expenditure on Lotteries Commission products increased by 16.7% from $346 million to $404 million. This is a dramatic increase compared to the previous year’s 4.7% increase, and is the highest ever expenditure for the Commission.
  • Casino gambling expenditure (which includes casino gaming machines) decreased by 2.4% from $477 million to $465 million. This reverses the 1.6% increase from the previous year.
Estimated turnover (the amount gambled) across the four sectors was $15.892 billion, compared with $16.376 billion the previous year. Please note that turnover is not an indicator of the amount spent by players or of the operator's profit.
