Benefits of working at Internal Affairs
The Department of Internal Affairs Te Tari Taiwhenua (DIA) provides a number of benefits for all employees. By offering these benefits, it is hoped that each employee will be able to achieve their full potential in an encouraging and supportive environment.

Work / life balance
We value our employees and have a flexible working hours policy to provide opportunities for employees to have a balance between work and home life.
School holiday programme
We provide a subsidy for community based school holiday programmes.
Our leave provisions are generous. In addition to the four week annual leave entitlement, most employees have three departmental holidays between Christmas and New Year. The annual sick leave provision is generous and is applicable from the first day of service. Some employees can also negotiate to purchase up to two weeks extra leave in July of each year.
Westpac’s ‘Government Employee Pac’, is available to all permanent DIA employees offering preferential rates on personal banking.
Employee health checks
As part of our Wellbeing programme, bi-annual on site health assessments are offered to all employees.
Vaccinations are offered annually to all employees.
Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
EAP is a free, confidential counseling service available to all employees, and their immediate families to help deal with issues that are affecting their work or personal life.
All employees are entitled to an annual eye examination paid for by the Department. Where the examination identifies the requirement for correction, a maximum of $350 will be paid once every two years for the cost of glasses or contact lenses.

Learning and development
We have a comprehensive approach to learning and development. All employees have an individual development plan and a range of development opportunities are available for employees to build skills and enhance careers in the Department and the wider public service. Study assistance is available to support external development activities.
DIA has a unique broad range of functions. All employees are encouraged to take up the many opportunities presented to them to develop their careers, including secondments across the Department.
Chief Executive Awards
The Chief Executive Awards are annual awards that provide high potential employees with funding to enable them to undertake a significant development activity.
DIA mentoring scheme
Our internal mentoring scheme aims to develop and support managers and team leaders.
Management and leadership development
A Management and Leadership Development Framework sets out opportunities for the development of managers in DIA.
DIA has a friendly and open environment. We encourage people to work together as ‘one organisation’ and we like to have fun and celebrate our achievements. DIA has Social Events Committees in Christchurch, Wellington, Manukau and Auckland. DIA employees from other centres are encouraged to meet socially to build relationships and enjoy each others company.
All employees are encouraged to participate in our ‘celebration’ weeks:
- Matariki week - midwinter celebration of the Māori New Year
- Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori - a week to celebrate the beauty of Te Reo Māori and promote the importance of keeping it alive and vibrant in everyday life
- Wellbeing week - a week long promotion of health and wellness throughout the Department
To further promote healthy lifestyles, team work and the ’one organisation’ approach, funding can be provided for sports teams that represent DIA.
